HERMISTON — Just when the HRV boys soccer team couldn’t afford another big injury, it incurred four more during Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Hermiston.
Overshadowing a superb team effort and a hat trick by Corey Vandlac were knee injuries to starters Alex Ponce, Todd Price, Arnolfo Santillan and goalkeeper Julio Loza.
Some, like the one to Loza, were more serious (torn meniscus); others merely enough to land the player on the bench for the remainder of the game.
“Unfortunately, it seems like all of our injuries have been at positions on the field we can’t afford to lose,” said coach Doug Beveridge. “We don’t yet know the diagnoses on Alex or Arnolfo, but Julio could be out for awhile.”
Beveridge wasn’t certain about the condition of Price, but said his status was day-to-day. In the meantime, the Eagles are hoping to get relief from newcomer Obed Garduno, a freshman midfielder.
“Obed looked really comfortable in his first outing for us,” Beveridge said. “He made a beautiful assist to Corey in the second half, and may end up helping us out a lot while we get healthy.”
Two more players who may see extended minutes are sophomore Sean Rawson, who also assisted Vandlac in the second half, and junior Jake Pruitt, who scored his first varsity goal on Tuesday.
“It’s nice that we have so many options,” Beveridge said, “but these injuries worry us a bit. If we can just get through this weekend, we should be alright.”
The Eagles welcome two of the league’s stronger teams to town this weekend. Game one against Summit took place Friday afternoon (results not yet available), while game two against first-place Mountain View is today at 11 a.m. at Westside Field.
