HRV softball rained out vs. R.A. Long

The Hood River Valley softball team’s non-league game against R.A. Long of Longview, Wash., was postponed Monday due to rain. The two teams hope to play today in Longview. Thursday’s rescheduled game vs. Oregon City has been postponed until May 1. Game time is 4:30 p.m. at Westside Field.

Youth lacrosse underway in HR

Hood River Youth Lacrosse began its season on April 11 at Westside Field, hosting two teams from Grant, and winning both games. The 5th/6th/7th grade team beat a predominantly 7th-grade team behind Jacob Bohince’s three goals and Dustyn Lyons’ goaltending. Peter Debbaut added two goals, while Steven Konopasek, Drew LaMaita, Henry Hunt and Cameron Kiyokawa each scored one. The local 8th grade team took control and won its game 20-10 behind Ian Bohince’s six goals. Paul Spaulding and Zed Debbaut each scored three, while Jonathan Ing and Eli Camero each had two. The next home match for HR Youth Lacrosse is April 28 at Westside.

Baklenko named new volleyball coach

Hood River Valley High School Athletic Director Mitch Sanders announced this week that the school has hired a new head volleyball for the 2003 season. Former Division I player and coach Jennifer Baklenko will join the Eagles coaching staff this summer and will try to help the program emerge from a down year in 2002, when the varsity team went 0-14 in league. Baklenko played collegiate volleyball at the University of California San Diego, and also coached at the University of Toledo. In addition, she coached club volleyball at the Glass City Volleyball Company in Toledo, Ohio. While at UCSD, she was a first-team all-conference selection three times, and was also named to the NCAA All-West Region first team in 1994.

HRWGA enjoying spring weather

Eighteen ladies counted “Fairway Shots Only” for the game of the day on April 14 at Hood River Golf Course. Jo Smith had the low gross score of the day with only 58 fairway shots. Patsy Prideaux used up 61 strokes to take second and Susan Gutzler was third with 64. Barb Zeller finished fourth with 66 and Clara Rice fifth with 69. Mary Smith finished the low net competition with the best score of 47.5. Carol Knowles was second with 48.5, Vera Hawk third with 49.5, Kaz Sumoge fourth with 53.5, and Jeanie Farwig fifth with 54.5.

Dynamos soccer sign-ups next week

The Hood River Dynamos Soccer Club will be holding registration on Tuesday, April 29, and Thursday, May 1, from 5-7 p.m. in Room 203 at Hood River Middle School. New players must be accompanied by a parent, and must bring with them a 2 x 2 photo, a $50 registration fee and a birth certificate. Returning players need all but the birth certificate. Registration is mandatory either of the two nights, and the fee will increase to $60 after May 1. Scholarship funds are also available. Tryout days are scheduled for May 6, 10, 13 and 14. Masters swim meet this weekend

The Hood River Valley Masters swim team will be hosting a meet at the HR Aquatic Center this Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 p.m. The pool will be closed to public swimming on these days and will resume normal hours on Monday, April 28.

Trail Daze scheduled for May 10

Hood River Community Education and Shortt Supply are teaming up once again for Trail Daze, which will be held on Saturday, May 10, at Hood River Valley High School. The event will offers a series of informational clinics for a small fee of $15. The clinics will last all day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature separate hour-and-a-half sessions that focus on orienteering, footwear, hydration and more. One of the highlights of Trail Daze will be a hands-on orienteering demonstration by world-renowned orienteer, Mal Harding. If you would like to learn more, call Community Education at 386-2055.

Parkdale third graders sing "12 Disaster Days of Christmas"

Welcome to your sing-able Christmas gift list. What follows is an emergency rendition of “12 Days of Christmas” – for outfitting your home or car in case of snow storm, earthquake, flood or other emergency. Read it as a simple list, or sing it to the tune of “12 Days” – you know, as in “ … and a partridge in a pear tree…” Not to make light of it, but the song is a familiar framework for a set of gift ideas that you could consider gathering together, even if the recipient already owns items such as a bunch of coats, tire chains and flashlights. Stores throughout the Gorge are stocked up on all these items. Buying all 12 days might be prohibitive, but here are three ideas for checking any of the dozen off your list (notations follow, 1-12.) The gift items needed to stay warm, dry and safe are also coded to suggest items in your abode (A) in your car (C) or both (B). 12 Gallons of Water (A) 11 Family meals (B) 10 Cans of propane (A) 9 Hygiene bags (B) 8 Packs of batteries (A) 7 Spare coats (B) 6 Bright red flares (C) 5 Cozy blankets (B) 4 Tire chains (C) 3 Flashlights (B) 2 cell phone chargers (B) 1 And a crush-proof first aid kit (B) Price ranges? Here’s a few quotes for days Three, Two, Four and Nine: n A family gift of flashlights (three will run $15-30, Hood River Supply, Tum-A-Lum) n Cell phone chargers (two will run $30-60) n Tire chains (basic set, $30, Les Schwab, returnable if unused for the winter) n Family meals ($100 or so should cover the basics for three or four reasonably well-fed days) n The home kit should be kept in a handy place near an exit, and remember that water needs to be replenished every few months. If you have a solid first aid kit already, switch out the gift idea with “and-a-sto-o-u-t- tub-for it-all …” Otherwise, it’s a case of assembling your home or car kits and making sure all members of the family know what the resources are and how to use them (ie flares and propane). Emergency situations are at worst life-threatening, at best deeply uncomfortable if you and your family are left without power for an extended period, or traveling and find yourself in a situation where you need to wait out a storm, lengthy traffic delay, or other crisis. Notes on the 12 gift ideas: 12 – Gallons of water: that’s one per person in a four-member family to last for three days, the recommended minimum to be prepared for utility outages. 11 – Easy-open packaged goods, energy bars, dried food and nuts are good things to include for nutrition. Think of what your family of four needs for three days to stay fortified and hydrated (see number 12).
