Eight Horizon Hawks receive All-league soccer honors

After a second place finish in their league and a trip to the first round of the 1A/2A state playoffs, the Horizon soccer team recently received several All-league honors. The Hawks also voted on team awards, which were announced at the final team banquet earlier this week.

League awards:

Stephen Stenberg — First team all league

Kent Ueland — Second team all league, third leading league scorer

Jared Nagreen — Honorable mention

Sam Seal — Honorable mention

David Rovianek — Honorable mention

Cameron Root— Honorable mention

Phillip Stenberg — Honorable mention

Coach Mark Lago — Second team Coach of the Year

Team awards:

Steven Stenberg — Most valuable player

Christina Brown — Most improved

Jared Nagreen — Christian Character

Josh Boyden — Coach’s award

Jared Nagreen — Player of the season

Sam Seal — Player of the season

Lawnmower torches Arbor Vitae on Portland Drive

The riding lawn mower driven by Norma Cannon overheated and made contact with dry arbor vitae owned by Lee and Norma Curtis, sending more than a dozen of the tightly-packed trees up in flames. The mower, visible at far right, was totaled. No one was injured; neighbors first kept the fire at bay with garden hoses and Westside and Hood River Fire Departments responded and doused the fire before it reached any structures.
