Ospreys excel at Animal Junior II

December 28, 2005

The Animal Junior II swim meet, held last weekend in Canby, is called the Animal because it is a difficult, challenging meet not meant for beginning swimmers. The meet consisted of every participant swimming the same three events: the 200 IM, the 100 fly and the 500 free. Times from each event were added together, giving swimmers a single overall time.

A handful of Hood River Swim Team Ospreys participated in the meet. Top placers from the Ospreys were Jessie Robertson and Scott Bergstrom, both of whom finished in fourth place overall.

Complete meet results:

Jessie Robertson — fourth overall: 6:40.84

Mariah Rawding — 14th overall: 8:03.27

Scott Bergstrom — fourth overall: 6:24.93

Lawnmower torches Arbor Vitae on Portland Drive

The riding lawn mower driven by Norma Cannon overheated and made contact with dry arbor vitae owned by Lee and Norma Curtis, sending more than a dozen of the tightly-packed trees up in flames. The mower, visible at far right, was totaled. No one was injured; neighbors first kept the fire at bay with garden hoses and Westside and Hood River Fire Departments responded and doused the fire before it reached any structures. Westside Fire chief Jim Trammell, in blue shirt, directs firefighters. The video was taken by Capt. Dave Smith of Hood River Fire Department. Enlarge
