June 3 Hood River First Friday bands

June 7, 2011

First Friday means art and music. June 3 provided a diverse selection of local acts, from the Liberty Bond Jug Band, playing roots music at Red Feather to the danceable percussion of Samba Hood Rio, on Third Street. As a bonus, here’s a clip from Saturday night’s rockin’ blues show by Tess Barr Blues Band at Double Mountain. (The sharp-eyed will notice that’s Hood River News’ own Entertainment writer and musician, Jim Drake, on percussion with Liberty Bond, and guitar at right with Tess Barr.)

Lawnmower torches Arbor Vitae on Portland Drive

The riding lawn mower driven by Norma Cannon overheated and made contact with dry arbor vitae owned by Lee and Norma Curtis, sending more than a dozen of the tightly-packed trees up in flames. The mower, visible at far right, was totaled. No one was injured; neighbors first kept the fire at bay with garden hoses and Westside and Hood River Fire Departments responded and doused the fire before it reached any structures. Westside Fire chief Jim Trammell, in blue shirt, directs firefighters. The video was taken by Capt. Dave Smith of Hood River Fire Department. Enlarge
