'Brush up your Hamlet' June 12 at Columbia Center of the Arts

'Brush up your Hamlet,' a free event featuring actor Sharon Laughlin (here presenting Act II, Scene II from Hamlet) at Columbia Center for Arts, 215 Cascade Ave., at 2 p.m. June 12, 2011. Laughlin will do monologues from Hamlet and interpretations of the text and its meaning, in addition to talking about growing up in The Dalles and her 35 years on stage in New York.

Lawnmower torches Arbor Vitae on Portland Drive

The riding lawn mower driven by Norma Cannon overheated and made contact with dry arbor vitae owned by Lee and Norma Curtis, sending more than a dozen of the tightly-packed trees up in flames. The mower, visible at far right, was totaled. No one was injured; neighbors first kept the fire at bay with garden hoses and Westside and Hood River Fire Departments responded and doused the fire before it reached any structures.
