Utah Ballroom Dance Company to perform at Columbia Arts
Columbia Center for the Arts presents the Utah Ballroom Dance Company for a special one-night-only performance of their show “Cinemagic” on Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m.
“CineMagic” is a theatrical sensation. Hollywood’s favorite characters and stories are brought to life with elegant costumes, breathtaking lifts and beautiful ballroom dancing. Audiences are swept away watching stars who look like Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and more, dancing to the music from the movies that made them famous.
Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors and are available at Columbia Center for the Arts, Waucoma Bookstore and online at www.columbiaarts.org. Columbia Center for the Arts is located at 215 Cascade Ave. in Hood River.
Bigfoot’s East Coast New Year's Eve
Celebrate the East Coast New Year's at The Pines with Bigfoot and his band. If you don't know what that means, it means the band is going to set their watches to Eastern Standard Time and do the big countdown to midnight EST, which will be 9 p.m. PST. That way, we can all be home in bed by 10 p.m. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. and the band always plays the best songs before you get there, so don't be late. Join Rick Hulett, Ben Bonham, Larry Wyatt and Tim Ortlieb for the fun at The Pines in Hood River.
Tess Barr at Waucoma Club
The Tess Barr Blues Band will be at the Waucoma Club in Hood River for New Year’s Eve on Dec. 31. They’ll be counting down the new year in style. Show starts at 9 p.m. The Waucoma Club, 207 Cascade Ave., Hood River; 541-387-2583.
Clumsy Lovers at CEBU Lounge
There’s a host of special music coming up this week at the CEBU Lounge in Hood River:
n Saturday, Dec. 29 — Hanz Araki & Kathryn Claire Band, 9:30 p.m., Irish flute and fiddle masters: Irish flute player Hanz Araki is the quintessential world music musician. He has performed around the world with the Juno Award-winning Paperboys, The Bridies, Casey Neill and an all-star tribute to The Pogues called “K.M.R.I.A.”
n Sunday, Dec. 30 — Shook Twins, 9:30 p.m., eclectic quirky folk: Born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho, Shook Twins are a quirky folk band now hailing from coniferous forested Portland. Identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook and Kyle Volkman form the core trio. Central elements of their sound are a wide range of instrumentation, including banjo, guitar, upright bass, mandolin, face drum (beatbox), glockenspiel, ukulele, djembe and their signature golden egg.
n Monday, Dec. 31 — The Clumsy Lovers, New Year’s Eve Spectacular, 9:30 p.m., folk-rock/bluegrass/Celtic jam band: The Clumsy Lovers have brought their mix of fiddle and banjo-fueled, bluegrassified Celtic rock to North American audiences for over a decade. With more than 2,500 performances under their belts, their high-energy shows have worn out dance floors and created a loyal following in 49 states and across their homeland of Canada.
Keegan Smith plays NYE at Mt. Hood Meadows
There’s music and more this winter at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort. All of the music is hosted in the Vertical Restaurant & Bar in the North Lodge on the third floor. Music is free for all ages unless otherwise noted.
n Saturday, Dec. 29, 3-6 p.m.: Shook Twins
The Shook Twins intertwine harmonies with an eclectic and eccentric blend of folk, roots, and pop. Identical Portland local twins Laurie Shook (vocals, banjo, percussion and beat box) and Katelyn Shook (vocals, guitar and mandolin) pair with Kyle Volkman on bass.
n Sunday, Dec. 30, 3-6 p.m. Tony Furtado
Furtado is an acoustic bluesman, slide guitarist, banjo wizard and songwriter, with a riveting voice. His own creative interpretation/hybrid of Americana and indie rock is captivating.
n Monday, Dec. 31, 8-12:15 a.m. Keegan Smith and the Fam. A super-fun, high-energy Portland-based band. The sound spectrum ranges from blues to neo-soul, hip-hop to acoustic roots, and reggae to funk. They won Best Live Performance at the 2011 Portland Music Awards.

New Year’s Eve at Solstice
The MacMillan, McAlexander and Bell Trio will be performing an evening of original music New Year’s Eve at Solstice Wood Fire Cafe in Bingen, Wash., from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Free in-house baby-sitting available.
NYE at CG Hotel
Wind up 2012 at the Columbia Gorge Hotel with pianist Tony Klugel playing in the lounge starting at 6 p.m. At 8 p.m. it’s David Cooley at the piano with Swingin’ Hearts & Rockin’ Souls in the Valentino Lounge until 1 a.m. It’s your choice — an East Coast Countdown at 9 p.m. or a West Coast Countdown at midnight.
