The outcome was not unexpected against Pendleton Wednesday, but that doesn't mean the Hood River Valley wrestling team was happy about it.
The Pendleton Buckaroos defeated the Eagles 42-19 on the Eagles' senior night, the first of back-to-back dual meets for both teams.
"They took away our offense and we didn't adjust," said HRV coach Trent Kroll.
The Eagles took out their frustrations the next night on The Dalles-Wahtonka as they overcame a slow start and blasted the Eagle-Indians 52-16 to retain the River Clash Cup.
On Wednesday, the Bucks, ranked No. 2 at 5A, took advantage of a few forfeits and dominated the Eagles at the upper and lower weight classes.
The Bucks won nine matches, including seven straight from 285-138 pounds.
The Eagles were able to get some momentum at the middle weight classes to provide their highlights of the night.
First, Katie Eddy went to overtime against TJ Hancock before losing a hard-fought match 8-6.
At 145 pounds, Cesar Zarate dominated Alex Ferder throughout the match and got a 7-1 decision.
David Brunk then started a succession of drama-filled matches when he pinned Laramie Boston in 2:24 at 152 pounds.
Forrest Broddie followed that with the match of the night for HRV at 160 pounds.
After leading 4-3 at end of the second round, Broddie saw No. 8-ranked Ethan Johnson rally back with an escape point to tie. But Broddie quickly countered with two takedowns and built an 8-5 lead heading into the final seconds.
Broddie went for a pin, only to have Johnson pick up a pair of reversal points with five seconds left to cut his lead to a point; but he was able to hold on and get the win.
Broddie had been battling a flu all week, but somehow found enough energy to hold off Johnson.
"It's just a mental thing," Broddie said. "You just have to ignore (being sick.)"
The Pendleton match was the final home match for HRV seniors Ben Perez, Francesca Ybarra and Eddy, as well as stat crew member Savanna Holloway.
After losing to Pendleton, the Eagles headed to The Dalles to defend the River Clash Cup.
Despite having two matches in two nights, Broddie was not worried about the Eagles' mentality.
"We'll have plenty of energy," he said. "When you are defending the cup you find the motivation."
The match got a late start due to referee scheduling problems and when it did, both teams looked like they were competing in their second dual match in two days.
In the first five matches of the night, the loser was held scoreless.
Jessica DeHart earned a technical fall at 106 pounds, running up 16 points in just 2:24, to open the match for HRV.
However, the next three Eagle wrestlers went scoreless in decision defeats.
Andrew DeHart re-established the momentum in HRV's favor when he pinned Jackson Woods in 2:19 at 132 pounds. After nearly pinning Woods to end the first round of the match, DeHart drove him to the mat in the opening seconds of the second round and finished the job.
"When I crunched him down I was able to slide my arm in and then bumped him with the half," DeHart said.
The Eagles rolled after DeHart's match and the Eagle-Indians were not able to keep it close.
HRV won eight of the next nine matches. Wins for HRV included pins by Chas Peterson, Zarate, Brunk, Broddie and Andrea Graebel. Steven Swafford, and Juan Karlos Hernandez won by decision with Nick Morgan winning via major decision.
After losing the night before in Pendleton DeHart said he was amped up for The Dalles match.
"We have tons of energy tonight," he said. "We're pumped up and ready to go. It feels good."
The Eagles get a chance to rest up and work on issues which need to be corrected until Friday when they head to Marshall High School in Portland for a special district state qualifier, combining teams from the PIL and the Columbia River Conference.

Parkdale third graders sing "12 Disaster Days of Christmas"
Welcome to your sing-able Christmas gift list. What follows is an emergency rendition of “12 Days of Christmas” – for outfitting your home or car in case of snow storm, earthquake, flood or other emergency. Read it as a simple list, or sing it to the tune of “12 Days” – you know, as in “ … and a partridge in a pear tree…” Not to make light of it, but the song is a familiar framework for a set of gift ideas that you could consider gathering together, even if the recipient already owns items such as a bunch of coats, tire chains and flashlights. Stores throughout the Gorge are stocked up on all these items. Buying all 12 days might be prohibitive, but here are three ideas for checking any of the dozen off your list (notations follow, 1-12.) The gift items needed to stay warm, dry and safe are also coded to suggest items in your abode (A) in your car (C) or both (B). 12 Gallons of Water (A) 11 Family meals (B) 10 Cans of propane (A) 9 Hygiene bags (B) 8 Packs of batteries (A) 7 Spare coats (B) 6 Bright red flares (C) 5 Cozy blankets (B) 4 Tire chains (C) 3 Flashlights (B) 2 cell phone chargers (B) 1 And a crush-proof first aid kit (B) Price ranges? Here’s a few quotes for days Three, Two, Four and Nine: n A family gift of flashlights (three will run $15-30, Hood River Supply, Tum-A-Lum) n Cell phone chargers (two will run $30-60) n Tire chains (basic set, $30, Les Schwab, returnable if unused for the winter) n Family meals ($100 or so should cover the basics for three or four reasonably well-fed days) n The home kit should be kept in a handy place near an exit, and remember that water needs to be replenished every few months. If you have a solid first aid kit already, switch out the gift idea with “and-a-sto-o-u-t- tub-for it-all …” Otherwise, it’s a case of assembling your home or car kits and making sure all members of the family know what the resources are and how to use them (ie flares and propane). Notes on the 12 gift ideas: 12 – Gallons of water: that’s one per person in a four-member family to last for three days, the recommended minimum to be prepared for utility outages. 11 – Easy-open packaged goods, energy bars, dried food and nuts are good things to include for nutrition. Think of what your family of four needs for three days to stay fortified and hydrated (see number 12).
