The fourth-annual Festival of the Fly returns to the Skylight Theatre and Pub Feb. 21 for an evening of hanging out with fellow backcasters and watching some of the most cutting-edge fish porn ever created.
The event — a fundraiser for Friends of the White Salmon River — features 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. showings of GeoFish, a recently released feature-length film about a group of guys on the adventure fishing trip of a lifetime through South America.
“It’s the kind of movie where you don’t even want to get up to get a beer,” said event organizer Chris Ellison. For stunning high-definition GeoFish previews, see www.vimeo.com/motivfishing.
Festival of the Fly was started in 2009 in memory of avid local fisherman Glen Haack, who passed away that same year.
Ellison said of Haack, “He was a legendary local fisherman who was willing to share his knowledge with anyone on the river. If you were a fisherman, you were his friend; and being his friend was a pleasure.”
The $20 ticket fee gets each person 10 raffle tickets (additional tickets are $1 each) that will be drawn for prizes ranging from fishing gear, rods and reels, dinner and hotel packages to the top prize, two Sage One rods that retail for close to $1,000 each.
“We have some pretty sweet raffle prizes thanks to our local business friends,” Ellison said. “We try to keep this an all-local event; all the stuff in the raffle can be purchased locally. And the funds we raise go to the Friends of the White Salmon, which does work on local rivers.
Businesses sponsors include Andrew’s Pizza, Gorge Fly Shop, Full Sail Brewing, Kayak Shed, Food Services of America, Morgan Distributing, Lemma Wines, Sage & Redington, Tom Larimer Guide Service and Dick Halverson.
Formed in 1976, FWSR is an all-volunteer advocacy group with the mission to protect the White Salmon River and its watershed in order to restore and preserve the river and riparian habitats.
