Cascade Locks presents Sternwheeler Days

CASCADE LOCKS — New events, including Saturday’s Ducky Derby fundraiser, fill the schedule for the June 27-30 Sternwheeler Days, Cascade Locks’ annual community festival.

Also new this year: interpretive speaker Myrna DeBolt, who will present on the region’s early history from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Marine Park.

Parks and Rec holds a fundraiser dance on Friday, for all ages, from 7-9 p.m. in the pavilion.


Things get started June 27 when the annual Mountain Man encampment settles in on Thunder Island beginning at 4 p.m. These authentic re-enactors of pioneer and explorer practices will remain all weekend, demonstrating their skills and discussing 18th century ways in the great West.

Other highlights include Lions Bingo from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and the 11 a.m. parade on Saturday, starting at Bridge of the Gods.

Eyeopener Lions host their annual breakfast Saturday and Sunday from 7-11 a.m.

There will be crafts and vendor booths, along with live music in Marine Park all weekend.

Ducky Derby will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wine tasting hosted by White Buffalo will be in the Marine Park Pavilion from 3-7 p.m.

Cascade Locks Park, Ohio, holds its Canal Days on the same weekend, an Internet search reveals.

The park, located around a historic barge passage system on the Ohio-Erie Canal, hosts the annual festival that also features a Ducky Derby.

Sixth Annual Harvest Fest Pie Eating Contest

The sixth annual Pie Eating Contest at Hood River Harvest Fest is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and HRVHS youth service group Leaders for Tomorrow. HRVHS student Dylan Polewczyk won the 1-minute fruit-pie eating event. Key rule, as stated by Chamber President Jason Shaner, “You have to eat the pie, you can’t just dislocate it.
