Special Olympics at State

Hood River’s Special Olympics team concluded its winter season recently with the Special Olympics of Oregon State Championships March 8-10 at Mt. Bachelor. Pictured are team members Joe Cannon, Dylan Bigelow, Kardell Mann, Charles Kronger, Nolan Carlson, AnaLinda Orlickas and Melody Nilson. Coaches were Dominick Leonardo, Jena Christiansen, Kelci Barnes, Cale Rice and Amanda Thomas.

The team offers a special thanks to Doug’s Sports for its generous donation of garments and gloves for the athletes.

Team results are as follows:

Canon: Super G-7th, slalom-5th, giant slalom-bronze

Bigelow: 50 meter race-silver, 100 meter race-bronze

Mann: Super G-7th, slalom-5th, giant slalom-bronze

Kroner: Super G-5th, slalom-bronze, giant slalom-bronze

Carlson: Super G-6th, slalom-6th, giant slalom-6th

Orlickas: Super G-6th, slalom-6th, giant slalom-4th

Nilson: Super G-silver, slalom-silver, giant slalom-gold

Lawnmower torches Arbor Vitae on Portland Drive

The riding lawn mower driven by Norma Cannon overheated and made contact with dry arbor vitae owned by Lee and Norma Curtis, sending more than a dozen of the tightly-packed trees up in flames. The mower, visible at far right, was totaled. No one was injured; neighbors first kept the fire at bay with garden hoses and Westside and Hood River Fire Departments responded and doused the fire before it reached any structures.
