The fourth-annual Gorge Food Forum will take place at the Hegewald Center and Exhibit Hall at the Skamania Fairgrounds on Oct.12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is located at 710 S.W. Rock Creek Drive in Stevenson, Wash.

This day-long event features more than a dozen food and farm workshops, and is co-presented by Gorge Winds Community Grocery, Gorge Grown Food Network and WSU-Extension. An indoor farmers market will happen simultaneously from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration for Gorge Food Forum is free, but pre-registrants will be entered in a raffle for prizes.
Woniya Thibeault, this year’s morning keynote speaker, will present “Thriving Off the Grid Through the Power of Local Food.”
Thibeault and her partner operate “From Farm and Forest” in the foothills of Mount Hood. Together they have created a life that allows them to grow or forage most of their food, and they share their passion with others through survival skill building workshops. They sell their meat, foraged goods and produce to local customers.
Gorge Food Forum will offer morning and afternoon workshops that teach food skills such as gardening and cooking, and make eating local food easier and more enticing.
Workshops will include:

n Root Cellars Made Easy
n Foraging Wild Fruits
n Intro To Aquaponic Vegetable Growing
n Get to Know the Good Garden Bugs
n Food Skills for Self-Reliance
Patrons of the afternoon indoor farmers market will enjoy live music and cooking demonstrations.
Numerous local farmers will sell their products, giving shoppers the chance the stock up on the bounty of locally grown storage crops, fruit, value-added goods, meat and more. Kids’ activities will be offered, and a local food cart will be available for lunch options.
Gorge Winds Community Grocery will accept food donations for the Skamania County Food Bank at the door.

Sixth Annual Harvest Fest Pie Eating Contest
The sixth annual Pie Eating Contest at Hood River Harvest Fest is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and HRVHS youth service group Leaders for Tomorrow. HRVHS student Dylan Polewczyk won the 1-minute fruit-pie eating event. Key rule, as stated by Chamber President Jason Shaner, “You have to eat the pie, you can’t just dislocate it. We will be checking for pie dislocation.” Enlarge
