A busy Saturday in sports

There’s always something happening in Hood River County, but Saturday’s list of athletic happenings is especially long. Here’s a quick roundup of several things going on:

n HRVHS baseball and softball home doubleheaders starting at noon at home fields; n Horizon baseball doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Collins Field; n HRV boys varsity lacrosse game, 2 p.m. at HRVHS football field; n Mid-Columbia Little League opening day ceremony, 6 p.m. at HRVHS Traner Field; n Gorge Short Track ShootOut mountain bike races, starts 9:30 a.m. and runs all day in Cascade Locks; n Gorge FC semi-pro soccer game, 7 p.m. at HRVHS football field.

Lawnmower torches Arbor Vitae on Portland Drive

The riding lawn mower driven by Norma Cannon overheated and made contact with dry arbor vitae owned by Lee and Norma Curtis, sending more than a dozen of the tightly-packed trees up in flames. The mower, visible at far right, was totaled. No one was injured; neighbors first kept the fire at bay with garden hoses and Westside and Hood River Fire Departments responded and doused the fire before it reached any structures.
