Hazel Kelly Marsh, age 90, died Feb. 14, 2009, at Providence Brookside Manor in Hood River, Ore.
A graveside service will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, with a reception to follow at the Pine Grove Grange. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 4-6 p.m. at the Tribute Center.
Hazel Kelly Marsh was born April 28, 1918, In Hood River. She was the youngest of four children born to Joe and Clara (Hunt) Jarvis, joining siblings Gerald, Myrtle and Willard.
Hazel grew up in Pine Grove and attended Hood River High School, graduating in 1937. She married Scott Kelly in December 1938, and a daughter, Joni, was born several years later. Soon after Scott returned from World War II, they bought the Jarvis orchard.
Hazel was a homemaker, but like many farmers’ wives, packed fruit in the fall for Moore and Pooley orchards. In the mid-1950s she became a receptionist for both the Hood River Hospital and Apple Growers Association.
Scott and Hazel divorced in the early 1970s, and Hazel moved to Lincoln City by the beach she always loved. She later married John Marsh and they enjoyed trips to Hawaii, golfing and jamming music together.
Kelly, as she liked to be called, was also a knitter, and supplied the family and neighbors with many beautiful socks which she was always noted for. Leaving the coast was not an option after John’s death, as she loved her home overlooking the ocean, and had many seagulls and raccoons depending on her for their next meal. Taking a fall in 2006 left her unable to return to her house, and she has since called Brookside Manor home.
Kelly loved everyone at Brookside and loved being close to her family. Kelly had another bad fall nearly three weeks ago, and although the surgery was successful, at age 90 she felt she was too old and tired to fight back. She passed away on Feb. 14, with family at her side.
She is survived by her daughter, Joni Walker, and special son-in-law, Don, of Hood River; four grandchildren: Scott Walker and Liz, of Tillamook, Ore., Debbie Ketchum and Greg, of Stayton, Ore., Chris Walker and Elaine, and Eric Walker and Trisha, of Hood River; 10 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Sam, Weston, Rachel, Cody, Kam, Abby and Johanna Walker, and Kelly Ketchum and Keshia Harris.
Also surviving Kelly are her niece, Marion Reed; nephew, Rocky Jarvis, and cousins Martha Ann Weber, of Odell, Dick Jarvis and Josephine Anderson.
