Virginia Laruth Porter passed away Nov. 30, 2010, at the Hood River Care Center. She was born June 2, 1921, in Orr, Okla., to Walter Douglas and Mattie Gertrude (Briscoe) Porter.
As a child she moved with her family from Oklahoma to Texas during the Great Depression. She grew up and attended school in Odessa, Texas, graduating in 1938.
Virginia worked as a stenographer for the Army Air Corp at Midland Air Field during World War II. In 1974 she returned to Oklahoma, working for the state public broadcast system. She retired in 1983, moving to New Mexico. Bored with retirement, Virginia entered New Mexico State University, enjoying notoriety as the oldest full-time student until graduating on the dean’s list with her bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism in 1993.
In 1995 she moved to Hood River, Ore., and lived throughout the Columbia River Gorge; in Stevenson, Wash., North Bonneville, Wash., and back to Hood River. Until recently she managed Hamilton Park Senior Living in North Bonneville and worked in the gift shop at the Bonneville Dam, where she enjoyed meeting tourists from around the world and commuting to work in her bright yellow Mustang convertible.
Virginia collected friends everywhere she lived. In addition to a host of friends she is survived by her son, Doug Rolls, of Portland, Ore.; two grandsons, Jacob Rolls, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Andrew Rolls, of Midland, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Bryson Rolls and Chloe Rolls, both of Midland, Texas.
