Jesse "Bud" Smith, 80, of Hood River, Ore., went to be with our Lord on March 2, 2011, passing away at the Hood River Care Center. He was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Hood River to William Martin and Nora Ann (Cole) Smith.
Jesse was raised in the Hood River Valley and attended Barrett and Park Street Schools.
He was drafted and served our country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1953. He served in Germany and was also stationed in Amsterdam during a time of flooding and he would often reflect and talk about the beauty of the morning dew on all the tulip petals.
In his younger years he worked for local farmers and would have enjoyed having his own farm. He worked for Martin Marietta Aluminum Factory in The Dalles until his lungs collapsed. He then worked for the Neal Creek sawmill in Odell.
Jesse loved to garden and carpentry; his garden was abundant with flowers and vegetables and he built many things, including furniture. He was scientifically curious and experimented with projects to see their final results. He was an avid fisherman and could be found out on the river catching steelhead.
He is survived by his sister, Mildred Fey, of Goldendale, Wash.; sister-in-law, "Babs" Smith, of White Salmon, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his little dog, Jennie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and two brothers. He will be missed by all.
