Chester “Bob” Robert Severance Jr.

Chester Robert "Bob" Severance Jr. passed away on Aug. 28, 2011, at his home in Hood River, Ore. He was born Feb. 19, 1943, to Chester Robert and Ruby Lora (Beck) Severance in Inglewood, Calif.
Bob grew up in Hawthorne, Calif., and graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1960. He attended El Camino College for two years before entering the United States Navy in 1962. He served on the communications vessel USS Belmont, until he was honorably discharged in 1966.
After returning home he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from California State University in Long Beach, where he graduated with honors in 1970.
During his professional career, Bob worked for Hughes Aircraft Company. He worked on an electronics production team, producing items such as a tank laser fire control system for the U.S. Armed Forces main battle tank. Bob continued at Hughes, which was later purchased by Raytheon Corporation, and retired after 25 years.
Bob became a follower of Jesus Christ in 1975 and joined First Presbyterian Church in Westminster, Calif., where he served as a Sunday school teacher and elder. In 2003 he moved to Hood River, Ore., and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Hood River, continuing to serve as a teacher and church deacon. He spent most of his retirement years in prayer, the study of God's word and writing a commentary on the book of Revelations. He kept a prayer journal and faithfully prayed for everyone he knew.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by a sister, Betty Weatherly, and her husband, Charles; a brother, Neal Severance, and his wife, Julie; nephew, Paul Weatherly; and five nieces: Eileen Jacobs, Rachel Weatherly, Lora Weatherly, Christy Severance and Amanda Severance.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the First Baptist Church of Hood River, 1889 Belmont Drive. Pastor Bruce Parker will officiate. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at the Pine Grove Butte Cemetery.
