Melvin Laurez Schock
June 27, 1927 - June 8, 2012
Melvin Laurez Schock, 84, a longtime Hood River resident, went to be with the Lord on June 8, 2012, at his family’s home in Bend, Ore. He was born on June 27, 1927, at the family farmhouse in Payette, Idaho, to Henry Rudolf and Lucilie Helen (Schulze) Schock.
Melvin worked with his father, who did custom work with local farmers, fixing their implements and farm equipment. He learned much from his father working on farm equipment and at the age of 22 started working for Rush Construction Company, which had rock crushing equipment throughout the Pacific Northwest. He traveled throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California.
Melvin moved to Hood River in 1957 and went to work for Hood River Sand and Gravel, from which he retired in 1989. After his retirement, he worked on many church building projects for his church as well as for other churches in Oregon.
Melvin was an active member of our community and his Assembly of God Church, where he worked with the Royal Ranger boys group, guiding and teaching young men for almost 30 years. He was the first person to be there when someone needed help.
In a letter he wrote in March 2000 entitled “Things I Like,” Melvin expressed a love for the outdoors (fishing, hunting and gardening) as well as visiting with family and friends. He shared his amazement of what he had seen in his life with the evolution of farm equipment and other technologies.
It was very clear in his mind and words that mankind, “with God’s help, has moved forward into this present day” and that his hope was that “people live peacefully, honestly and respectfully with one another. In troubled times, sit a while by a mountain steam, see the clear water flowing, see life around it, let peace be seen there. Then go return to your busy lifestyle. Ha! But smile once in a while.”
Melvin never married but is much loved by his family and the friends he has collected over the years. He is survived and will be dearly missed by Joe and Katie Scott; his two “grandchildren,” Michelle Scott and Andrew (Kirsten) Scott; great-granddaughter Ryker Scott of Bend; nephews Robert, Avery, Randy, Rusty and Jeffrey; and 17 great-nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold and Bill and nephews Vernon and Myron.
It was Melvin’s wish that any memorial contributions be made in his name to the River of Life Assembly of God Church – Office Expansion Fund.
A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, at Anderson’s Tribute Center in Hood River. A time to celebrate Melvin’s life and mourn his passing is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, at River of Life Assembly of God Church, 979 Tucker Road, Hood River. Graveside rites will follow on Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery of Payette, Idaho.
