Dorothy “Flora” Clare Collins

Dorothy "Flora" Clare Collins, 97, passed away at the Hood River Care Center in Hood River, Ore., on March 12, 2012. Dorothy was born to William and Mamie (Lindner) Potter Dec. 28, 1914, in Gretner, Neb. She soon became known as Flora Potter.
Flora's early education took place in Omaha, Neb. She then moved to Ellensburg, Wash., where she graduated from Ellensburg High School in June 1934.
On May 8, 1944, Flora married Delbert Owens in Vancouver, Wash. They remained married until his death in 1966.
Flora worked for Lasher Tractor and Equipment before taking a position as a recorder for the Clark County Auditor's office in Vancouver, Wash. She remained there until she married Jack Collins.
She met Jack through mutual friends in 1967 and they were married at Christmas, 1968. They remained married until his death in 2000. Jack and Flora continued to operate their fruit ranch in Hood River for many years while spending their winters in Arizona.
They also loved going to Hawaii, traveling there as often as they could. Their travels also took them to the United Kingdom in the 1990s.
Flora's hobbies included sewing, knitting, stamp collecting and reading, especially cooking magazines. She also enjoyed her morning walks with her neighbors.
She is survived by stepson Jack and his wife, Laurie, of Hood River, and stepdaughter Sally Vencill, of Corvallis. She is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
One grandson preceded her in death.
A service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday, March 17, Anderson's Tribute Center. Father Ron Maag of St. Mary's Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Idlewilde Cemetery.
Memorials are encouraged to be made in Flora's name to the Master Gardener's Club.
