March 21, 1920 - January 13, 2013
Lawrence S. “Larry” Henningsgard, 92, passed away Jan. 13, 2013, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Hood River, Ore. Larry was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
Services are planned for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 305 Ninth St., Hood River, with Pastor Jeff Mueller officiating. Military rites will be performed by the United States Navy Honors Team.
A reception will follow at the church, then interment at Idlewilde Mausoleum. Viewing is planned for Friday, Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a special time to greet with family from 4-5 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River.
Larry was born March 21, 1920, in Melrose, Minn., one of seven children to Edward and Nora (Sorenson) Henningsgard. He married LaRonne Olson in 1943 and they had two children together.
During World War II Larry served proudly in the U.S. Navy on Lunga Point aircraft carrier serving in the Pacific theater. He served from 1943 to 1945 and was always proud of his service for our country.
Larry moved to Hood River in 1951 after a stint of construction in Missoula, Mont.
On Aug. 12, 1962, Larry married Rolene D. Titus and they made their home in Hood River. He worked for Charlie Parker Construction and would fondly recall his adventures putting up the power lines from McNary Dam all the way to Troutdale.
In 1954 he went to work for Ted Hackett in his appliance store. Larry purchased the appliance store in 1974 and operated it until 1993 when he sold the business to the Paddock family.
In his own words in the Hood River News Larry said “I’ve made a lot of friends over the years as I’ve stayed busy involved in selling appliance and running the business,” and joked that upon his retirement “I told a lot of my friends that I was going to go windsurfing, buy they just laughed. We’re going to do some traveling, and I plan to do some fishing.”
Larry enjoyed traveling and fishing just like he said he would; he also enjoyed his cattle farm, where family remembers raising cattle and bucking hay, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Larry is survived by his wife, Rolene Henningsgard, of Hood River; children Cary Henningsgard, of Denver, Colo., and Sherry Nicola and her husband, Charlie, of Centennial, Colo.; stepchildren Rick Titus, of Hood River, Christi Berry and her husband, Blane, of Sammamish, Wash., Margie Beecher and her husband, Don, of Dalhart, Texas, and Lowell Hahn, of Alaska.
He is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Geer, of Minneapolis, Minn.; five grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other distant family and many, many friends that he has collected over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.
Memorials are encouraged to be made in Larry’s name to either Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Hood River Valley Adult Center.
