Jim Drake’s Entertainment Blog: Dar Williams is concerned with bees, sings about myth and power and likes towns with ‘positive proximity’

As time moves on, 20 years doesn’t seem that long ago. When people say to me “I did this and that 20 years ago,” I’m fazed less and less in terms of mental trauma. Instead of thinking: “Oh my god, if you did that 20 years ago ... how old does that make me?” I’ve learned to just accept it and move on.

Jenn Rawling & Basho Parks play Cebu Lounge Sept. 7

“Basho” is a name you don’t hear about too often. As it turns out, Basho, one half of the folk duo consisting of Jenn Rawling and Basho Parks, had “some cool hippie parents,” and the name stems from Eastern philosophy, namely a 17th century haiku poet from Japan.

Sounds of Summer series kicks off with the Pat Travers Band July 21

To this day, guitarist Pat Travers can point to the one event that made him say “I want to be a guitar player.”

Slice of local life: Larry Wyatt – a hands-on approach to music

There’s an enthusiastic tone in Larry Wyatt’s voice as he demonstrates a unique wooden instrument that sits on the floor in the front of his May Street School music classroom. “These are “Studio 49” German-engineered xylophone bass boxes. They’re set up so we can play in the key of C, which is the same for my ukuleles.” With large mallets, Larry deftly plays a bass line that could be used in any number of simple folk songs, and then plays the first few measures of “Ode to Joy.” Full, rich, bell-like tones resonate around the room.

Jim Drake's Entertainment Blog: All she wants to do is dance

Except for a brief introduction to East Coast Swing a few years ago, I’m pretty much in the “two left feet” category as far as dancing goes. What I’ve noticed, though, is if people congregate in a place that has music, especially live music, the one thing you can count on is folks will dance.
